According to the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), tourism is a growing industry worth over $88 billion dollars, with many exciting career opportunities. The great thing about a career in tourism is that you can incorporate adventure into your profession. Most people want to live their lives to the fullest, and to have fond memories and exciting adventures to look back on.

Adventures in Tourism CareersThe tourism and travel industry is one of the few industries which actually encourage flexibility and international travel.  International work experience is seen as something very valuable in the industry, it is actually a good thing for your career to experience and work in a culture other than your own. So what better way to incorporate adventure into your life than with the experience of working in exotic locations all over the world?

These experiences will show a potential employer that you are outgoing, confident and adaptable, all vital skills in this dynamic industry.  It will help you in developing great people and communication skills by exposing yourself to different nationalities and cultures.  In an ever tightening job market, international work experience will help you stick out of the pack.  It will not only give you memories for a lifetime, but it will further help you in your career path.

Also vitally important is education. Relevant skills training and industry education will make you far more employable and allows you to get quality work experience with reputable employers. A solid education behind you gives you the tools to explore the world successfully, which is our aim here, combining adventurous travel experiences and improving your career outlook while you do it.

I have had the opportunity to work in dozens of countries on 5 continents in various roles in the tourism and hospitality industries.  I made sure I had my education completed before I packed my bags and that opened the doors for many great opportunities.  It has allowed me to work for cruise lines, airports, hotels, bars, restaurants, tour companies, schools and resorts, each expanding my skill set and experiences.

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only one page.” – St. Augustine

You can learn a lot in a class room but travel is the best teacher of all.  It develops an open mind, a life full of great experiences and of course adds some adventure into your life.  So make your travel experiences work for you positively in the future!  As the great traveller, St. Augustine said back in the 4th Century, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page”. Explore the vast and fascinating world around you. Let the tourism industry work for you. I promise you, it will be an adventure you will never forget!
