Why Is College English Important?

College English equips students with the right level of communication skills to get through college and beyond.

Having good English skills will help you climb the corporate ladder faster. Especially here in British Columbia where English is the “main language of communication”. In the academic world, some schools even offer short courses to improve one’s communication skills in English.

Here are 3 tips to help you learn College English:

  • Always practice – participate in class discussion, be less conscious about grammar mistakes. Professors are there to help you out, even some classmates! If you are shy, you can try to practice with a trusted friend and build the confidence to speak the language.
  • Make time – Set at least an hour a day to study English. If you are an international student, you are required to have a certain level of proficiency to be eligible in a school in British Columbia. You can review your materials and you can also further your proficiency by enrolling in a communications enhancement course.
  • Read – social media is helpful to learn the vernacular in a certain place. Add your classmates on social media and see how they talk. This exercise will help you balance formal English learned in school and informal English for casual conversations.
