PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Mass Communication program delivers a dynamic and comprehensive curriculum that integrates the theory, practice, and ethical dimensions of communication across diverse media platforms. Students explore key areas including mass media theories, journalistic writing, media ethics, and visual communication, gaining the skills required to succeed in today’s rapidly changing media environment.

This program offers focused pathways in public relations, advertising, broadcasting, and digital media, enabling students to align their studies with specific career aspirations. A capstone project challenges students to apply their learning in real-world scenarios, showcasing their professional competence and readiness for media-related careers. With a strong emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication, the program prepares graduates to actively shape and contribute to the evolving landscape of mass communication.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Analyse the historical development and evolution of mass media, identifying key milestones, technological advancements, and societal impacts.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in journalistic writing by producing news articles, feature stories, and editorial pieces that adhere to professional standards and ethical guidelines.
  • Evaluate media content critically, applying relevant theories and concepts to assess its accuracy, credibility, and potential biases.
  • Apply principles of visual communication to create compelling and effective multimedia content, including photography, graphic design, and video production.
  • Discuss the ethical considerations and legal frameworks that govern mass communication, including issues related to freedom of speech, privacy, and media ownership.
  • Design and implement strategic communication plans for public relations campaigns, incorporating audience analysis, message development, and evaluation metrics.
  • Develop advertising strategies and campaigns targeting specific audiences, utilizing market research, branding techniques, and creative messaging.
  • Produce radio and television content, demonstrating proficiency in broadcasting techniques, scriptwriting, and on-air presentation skills.
  • Utilise digital media tools and platforms effectively to engage audiences, manage social media accounts, and analyse metrics to measure campaign success.
  • Conduct research studies in mass communication, employing appropriate methodologies to gather, analyse, and interpret data, and communicate findings through written reports and presentations.
  • Evaluate the role of AI in generating and distributing content, and its impact on human creativity, employment, and audience engagement in the mass communications industry.
  • Analyse the ethical and legal considerations of AI in media, including issues of bias, misinformation, authenticity of AI-generated content, and intellectual property rights.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Basic Admission Requirements

  • High School Completion: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 19 years of age.
  • Mature Student Status*: Applicants who have not completed high school and are at least 19 years of age may apply as a mature student.

*Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and have not completed high school or equivalent. Applicants will be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school. The applicant is required to provide the most recent transcripts or proof of academic accomplishments, a resume or summary of professional accomplishments, and two professional letters of recommendation. The applicant may be interviewed by the Registrar’s or Academic Office to further assess their suitability for admission to the program of study.

2. English Language Proficiency

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Minimum scores from accepted English tests (e.g., IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46, Duolingo 95, etc.).
  • Recent English proficiency test (within 2 years).
  • Proof of English-language education:
    • 2–3 years of secondary or post-secondary education completed in English in eligible countries.
  • International credentials must be recognized by WES, ICES, or IQAS.
