PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Medical Office Assistant program prepares students with the foundational skills required for entry-level positions in various healthcare settings, including medical and dental offices, hospitals, clinics, and medical insurance companies. This program provides comprehensive education in essential areas such as Advanced Medical Office Management, Electronic Health Records Management, and Clinical Skills, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for key administrative and support roles. Upon completion, students are equipped to handle core responsibilities effectively and are also positioned for career advancement and proficiency in the latest office technologies. The program fosters a range of competencies that enhance workplace success, preparing graduates for roles such as medical clerk, medical transcriber, medical office assistant, and assistant medical office manager.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Manage electronic health records (EHR) efficiently by applying knowledge of EHR systems to ensure accurate patient documentation and data security.
  • Process medical billing and insurance claims using specialised billing software to ensure timely and accurate invoicing and reimbursement.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in keyboarding and transcription techniques to create accurate medical documents and transcribe medical dictations with precision.
  • Compose professional medical office documents, emails, and reports using Microsoft Office applications and business writing standards.
  • Apply effective communication strategies to build positive relationships with patients and healthcare professionals, ensuring clear and empathetic patient interactions.
  • Implement basic pharmacological knowledge to assist in medication management and support clinical decisions within a medical office.
  • Evaluate current trends and emerging technologies in medical office practices, including artificial intelligence (AI), to improve workflow and patient care.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Basic Admission Requirements

  • High School Completion: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 19 years of age.
  • Mature Student Status*: Applicants who have not completed high school and are at least 19 years of age may apply as a mature student.

*Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and have not completed high school or equivalent.
Applicants will be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school.
The applicant is required to provide the most recent transcripts or proof of academic accomplishments, a resume or summary
of professional accomplishments, and two professional letters of recommendation. The applicant may be interviewed by the
Registrar’s or Academic office to further assess their suitability for admission to the program of study.

2. English Language Proficiency

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Minimum scores from accepted English tests (e.g., IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46, Duolingo 95, etc.).
  • Recent English proficiency test (within 2 years).
  • Proof of English-language education:
  • 2–3 years of secondary or post-secondary education completed in English in eligible countries.
  • International credentials must be recognized by WES, ICES, or IQAS.
